mitch ridder / keeps submitting work and gets published / 043012

Mitch, was in my 160 class 3 times and also took my photo 51 Photoshop class when I last taught it. I have known Mitch for at least 20 years from us both exhibiting together at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach. Mitch is an outstanding watercolor painter, but he wanted to learn more about photography about 4 or 5 years ago and came into my Photo 160 class.

He is one of the most successful students I have not only because he has the artists eye, but because he has great focus and works very hard. As I said before, the students who arrive early and are the last to leave... make use of the facilities and end up getting the most out of the class.

Mitch also has learned the value of submitting work to shows and magazines. The latest success is with DIGITAL PHOTO MAGAZINE, which is affiliated with OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHER MAGAZINE. http://www.dpmag.com/ Mitch will have work in the May 8th issue just ready to come out. Before that he was consistantly getting published in OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHER.

Here are the images that will be published and the info Mitch sent me about them. Thanks for sharing, Mitch. This information should be helpful to some of my current students.

"Bay Bridge" was shot on Yerba Buena Island, halfway across the Bay Bridge as it crosses the San Francisco Bay from Oakland into San Francisco. This hillside location is challenging to shoot from as parking is not allowed and pedestrian access is limited. On top of that, the hillside is densely covered with shrubs and a continuously growing eucalyptus grove that already restricts compositional choices. Due to the ongoing growth of vegetation, this view for photographers in the coming years will mostly disappear all together. What I now like most about this image that I didn't notice at the time of shooting, is how the green freeway sign is perfectly aligned in the center dip of the bridge's main cable.

Canon 50D, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, f/16, 4 second exposure, ISO 200, Flashpoint F-1150 tripod, Flashpoint F-1 ball head, Canon remote switch. Processed in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop CS5.

"LA Rush" was shot in Elysian Park on a very high overpass crossing the Harbor 110 Freeway as it leads from Pasadena into downtown Los Angeles. After choosing what I thought to be the best compositional position along the overpass, I set up my tripod, readied my camera gear, then waited for those very few moments when the natural light in the sky and the artificial lights of the city and cars finds a perfect balance of exposure. If I take my shot too soon, the camera exposes for the landscape and blows out the sky or visa versa. If I shoot too late, the sky goes a very unexciting black and I loose the foreground and skyscrapers silhouetting power. My best shooting window is usually around 25 minutes after sunset.

Canon 50D, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, f/11, 13 second exposure, ISO 200, Flashpoint F-1150 tripod, Flashpoint F-1 ball head, Canon remote switch. Processed in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop CS5.
